If you are one of the users who are planning to leave Twitter given the approach that the social network will take from its new owner, Elon Musk, you should know that you can download the content you contributed to the social network beforehand in case you want to save it.
It must be said that Twitter makes it easy. Also, instead of a simple text file, you’ll get an interactive file that you can browse and search for all your tweets, likes, direct messages, and your interactions on the microblogging site.
How to save your content before leaving Twitter
Very simple as we said:
- Log in to your Twitter account on the web.
- In the sidebar, click More > Settings and support > Settings and privacy.
- On the Settings page, select your account > Download a file of your data.
- Verify your identity using the code sent by email or text message.
- After that you will enter a page to Download a file of your data. Click on “Request File”.
Twitter will start collecting all your data and creating that interactive file. According to the company, this process can take up to 24 hours. Once it is finished you will receive a notification by email or the app.
Just go to Settings and privacy > Your account > Download a file of your data to get a file in ZIP compressed format. Download and extract to your computer and run the file in .html format.
This file will open in your default browser , and there you can browse all your tweets, likes, and direct messages using the sidebar on the left. Although the file will open in your browser all the data will be hosted locally on your computer. Consider saving it to an external drive or cloud storage service.
You can now leave Twitter if you consider it so… But with a copy of the content you contributed to the network in your custody.
